The practice of scientific management was introduced into Indian forestry in the late years of the nineteenth century. Under this, every patch of forest was required to be managed according to a management plan which envisages a coordinated and comprehensive strategy for working the forest resources in consonance with the national forest policy. Preparation of management plan necessitates deep understanding of principles and practices of forestry and methodology required for collection, analysis and interpretation of data from the said patch of forests. Over the time, with the change in objectives of forest management and contours of national forest policy, the principles and methodology of preparing management plan have undergone a sea change. The present focus of forestry is on sustainable management of forest resources with indomitable emphasis on conservation of bio-diversity. The book gives an in-depth, comprehensive, integrated and illustrated account of principles and methodology of preparing forest management plan for a forest division. It is designed to meet the needs of practicing forester who are required to prepare forest management plan in pursuit of their career. It also aims at helping forestry students, academicians, other government officials, environ-mentalists, and all those connected with the sustainable management of forest resources to understand principles, methodology and processes that go into making of a forest management plan.
